General description

The Educational-Scientific Complex «Institute for Applied System Analysis» (ESC «IASA») of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (MESU) and National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) was created after Decision of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in December 1997, on the base of Chair of Mathematical Methods of System Analysis of National Technical University of Ukraine «Kiev Polytechnic Institute» and Institute for Applied System Analysis of NAS of Ukraine and Ministry of Education of Ukraine.

Creation of Institute of double submission (to NAS of Ukraine and to Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine) was connected with embodiment of conception of science and education integration, having the aim of carrying out the pioneer scientific research in the country and training of special purpose of highly qualified specialists for NAS of Ukraine and other branches of national economy in the field of applied system analysis, modern information technologies and computer sciences. Scientific research work in the Institute is the inalienable part of specialists training.

Scientific departments (of Mathematical Methods of System Analysis, Applied Nonlinear Analysis, Numeral Methods of Optimization, and Information Recourses) which have glorious scientific traditions operate in the Institute.

Special purpose training of students of senior courses foresees the obligatory participation in scientific researches which are executed by the scientific departments of Institute and at the place of future work. As the experience of practical activity of our graduating students has shown, they work successfully as system analysts, circuit design engineers, mathematicians, programmers, local nets administrators, economists, in establishments of NAS of Ukraine, state organs of management of different levels, in particular branch of the research institutes, in commercial firms and banks.

Since June 2006, the educational-scientific complex "Institute for Applied Systems Analysis” incorporates the Department Computer Aided Design (CAD) and its Scientific and Research Institute of Information Resources “INFORES”. It was implemented with the aim to combine efforts and expertise of two well recognized groups in the field of the training of experts in computer science area as well as to provide the higher comprehensiveness of researches, which are conducted in the IASA.

CAD Department established the well known locally and abroad scientific school in the field of Computer Aided Design, which specializes in research, development and implementation of recent methods of modeling for technical and socio-economic facilities and optimization of their parameters and characteristics, the principles of distributed software and hardware network systems for design and education. Faculty of System Research was founded in 2007 on the basis of Departments IASA and CAD, which changed its name to the “Department of System Design".

1. ECTS Coordinator

Coordinator of the faculty is the person that maintains business relations with students and educational staff of the faculty and mostly is responsible for practical and educational aspects of ECTS realization.

This person informs students more detailed about ECTS, for example provides students with the informational packages were received from partner institutions, helps students to fill out an application form, explains the procedure for recognition of education and documents handling (learning contract, list of marks on disciplines), etc. Coordinator of the faculty is directing students on development of training program, combining the training requirements and their individual interests.

Communication between local and foreign institutions is officially conducting by coordinators of the faculties who shares the application forms and signed copies, discuss programs of study, prepares a list of marks for students who leave for training and for those who returning after graduation in their institution.

Coordinators of the faculties inform their colleagues about ECTS and its implementation in terms of allocation of credits for all courses of the department / faculty.

2. Structure of Department and main directions

of the scientific and research work

The training of highly qualified masters and engineers - system analysts and engineers and masters in computer systems for the IV level of accreditation in IASA is carried out by experienced teachers and leading scientists of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine from the Institute of Applied Systems Analysis, Institute of Cybernetics, Institute of Space Research, Institute of Mathematics, Institute of Problems of Information Registration and NTUU "KPI". Among them, 1 academician of the NAS of Ukraine, 15 professors, 26 associate professors.

Presently, the number of students in Institute is more than fifteen hundred. Organization of educational process at the Institute, in particular at the department of mathematical methods of system analysis, is carried out by the credit-module system, which is based on the European Credit Transfer and accumulating system (ECTS). The introduction of ECTS is one from the key areas of integration of higher education system of Ukraine into pan-European educational space.

The main areas of scientific activity of  IASA is:

  • development of principles and methods of system analysis;
  • conducting applied research in the field of system analysis;
  • Analysis and design of complex information systems;
  • forecasting of state problems;
  • system studies of global changes;
  • computer design in information environment of Internet, the usage of GRID technologies;
  • Design of network multimedia information resources;
  • Recent tools of computer optimal design of engineering facilities and socio-economic systems;
  • systems of  integrated CAD requested for implementation in large integrated circuits (LSI) and microelectronic-mechanical systems (MEMS);
  • implementation of large-scale international contacts in education and science;
  • sustainable development and global governance.

3. Learning Conditions

The main objective of MMSA department – is training of new generation of analysts, which are able to solve the complex interdisciplinary problems in various fields of science, technology and development of state

Equipped with understanding of modern requirements, the computer laboratories and classrooms have all conditions for practical training, including educational courses of CISCO network academy for design, construction and administration of local and global networks. It was launched the open class for preparation to work with SAP solutions using the equipment - a thin client Sun Ray 270 client, 4 USB 1.1 ports, two serial ports, mounted on a 17 "flat monitor, 1280x1024 max resolution, ROHS-6 complaint (Model - NTC- 202-00).

The department has a library, where was collected educational and methodical literature of disciplines as well as the curriculums of basic bachelor's and master's programs. Students can also use the library fund of NTUU "KPI".

4. Training Programs

Conducting of educational activity at the Department of MMSA for bachelors and masters from the academic year 2007/2008 is  carried out in the following areas:

- 6.040303 System Analysis (on professional orientation program for “System analysis and management”, qualification – bachelor of applied mathematics);

- 6.040302 Informatics (on professional orientation program for “Social Informatics”, qualification - bachelor of applied mathematics);

- 6.050101 Computer Science (on professional orientation program for “Intelligent Decision Support Systems”, qualification - bachelor of computer science).

Normative term of educational program for education in full-time regime - 3 years and 10 months (part-time - 4 years and 5 months). Normative term of educational program for master degree - 1 year and 10 months.

5. Methods of Teaching and Learning

ECTS - the system is based on the understanding that 60 credits determine the labour intensity (educational workload) of full-time regime student for one academic year. Thus, one ECTS credit is 36 academic hours. Total workload of education to obtain the bachelor degree (that normatively contains 3 years and 10 months) is not less than 240 credits.

Labour intensity of educational workload in terms of ECTS includes the time was spent for visiting the classrooms, practice, independent work (preparation for seminars and tests, execution of individual tasks during the semester, preparation of graduation paper), as well as control during semester.

Examination credits are the way to determine the quantitative scores of students - a set of competencies (that students will know, what will manage, what is able to do after the finishing of certain part of the learning process).

Synchronous organization of educational process requires pre-compilation of calendar. The MMSA department is currently using stream and group organization of educational process. Each stream and each group is created for one semester to study a specific discipline under the guidance of a particular teacher.

The planning of content of independent work of students is a peculiarity.

Each examination session contains three exams. This is the most important disciplines (credit modules) of natural-scientific and professionally-practical training. Another two credit modules assessing as a mixed-marking-system tests. For all other credit modules will be simple test. These modules are evaluated in the ECTS - mixed-marking, and in traditional assessments - passed / not passed. Such credit modules in each semester should not more than 5.

Each semester contains the only one individual task on a particular discipline. Only the one course or project work can be planned for the semester.

Total number of course projects and works prescribed by the bachelor training program – is not more than 5. In the first three courses of education the academic year has two semesters for 18 weeks and two examination sessions for 2 weeks.

Each academic week is 54 hours of student training and equal to 1,5 ECTS credit. Thus, 18 weeks of theoretical study in semester provides 27 credits and 2 weeks of exams - another 3 credits. Total 30 credits per semester and 60 credits – for academic year.

It’s prescribed for third course to have additional 4 weeks of industrial practice, which gives 6 credits. It’s prescribed for fourth course the defense of graduation paper (project). Therefore, the seventh semester – is standard but the eighth semester consists 9 weeks of theoretical education per week + examination period (15 credits), as well 10 weeks (15 credits.) – is pre-graduate practice and  graduation paper elaboration.

6. Grading scale

By the MMSA Department was implemented a rating system for the study performance evaluation (RSE), which is determine the academic rank of students and realize the  didactic principle, stimulate training activity during the semester.

Successful digestion of some credit modules is estimating by amount of credit scores - ranking score (RS), and academic progress of student in general - by the academic ratings. Score evaluation system is the main method of evaluating student work. The basis for RSE is step-by-step control and accumulation of rating points for the diversified educational and cognitive activity of students in the learning process.

Regulations on the RSE for the disciplines of department (which are setting the features of rating for the credit modules, its calculation methodology and principles of usage) are discussed and adopted at meetings of MMSA department. At the beginning of the academic year it should be communicated to the students and remains unchanged for the year. Regulation on the RSE is an annex to the syllabus subjects of discipline.

The system of control measures for each credit module is defined for construction of the RSE: some individual semester task, module test papers, colloquia, reports, and the defense of laboratory work, as well as the current control under practice and studies.

Afterwards, it is determined the maximum points for each control measure (- weight scores), taking into account the importance, complexity and scope of a student's learning activity. Amount of weighted scores determines the size (R) of the RSE scale for some credit module, which is foreseeing the semester based certification in the test format .Size (R) of the RSE scale for credit module, the semester of which is prescribed in the form of exam, is composed as a weighted sum of the points of control measures during the semester and a weighted score for the exam : . The part of control examination must be at least 40-30%.

Taking into account the amount of each credit module and its features, size R – scale can be different, the standard is the system of rating transfer in ECTS and traditional assessmens.

Assessment system of the quality of student education - standardized and formalized. For this purpose, it is developed the evaluation criteria via the system "quality - rating scores ” for each control measure with the definition of certain levels of learning and skills formation on the ground of weighted scores amount .

Similarly, the criteria are developed for exam evaluation.

Penalty points may be envisaged because of the late execution of individual task for semester or the defense of laboratory work, because the absence without grounded reasons on the practical and theoretical studies.

Students may accrue additional, incentive points for the execution of creative works on discipline (eg, participation in the discipline competitions at the level of faculty and institute, participation in the competitions of library-research papers and reviews of scientific works, preparation of tasks for improvement of didactic materials of discipline of didactic materials, etc.). The sum of penalty as well as incentive points must not exceed 0,1 .
